Bed bugs are one of those pests nobody wants to talk about — and that’s exactly why they keep spreading. Every year during Bed Bug Awareness Week, pest control professionals across the country try to cut through the stigma and get people the information they actually need.
At Delhi Pest Control, we’ve been serving the west side of Cincinnati since 1982. We’ve seen bed bug calls spike after family reunions, back-to-school season, and summer travel. We’ve also seen what happens when people wait too long to call. This week, we want to give you a straight look at what bed bugs are, how they get in, and what to do if you find them.
What Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed. They feed exclusively on blood — usually human — and they’re almost entirely nocturnal. That’s what makes them so hard to catch: they feed while you sleep and hide during the day in cracks, seams, and dark corners.
A common misconception is that bed bugs only live in dirty homes. That’s not true. Bed bugs don’t care about cleanliness. They care about proximity to a host. A spotless hotel room can have bed bugs. So can a brand-new apartment.
How Bed Bugs Spread
Bed bugs are hitchhikers. They don’t come in through your yard or crawl through gaps in your foundation. They travel on:
- Luggage and bags — hotel stays are one of the most common sources
- Used furniture — especially mattresses, couches, and bed frames purchased secondhand
- Clothing — after visiting an infested location
- Guests — their bags or coats can unknowingly carry bed bugs into your home
This is why bed bug problems often show up in clusters — an apartment building, a college dorm, or a neighborhood where people share furniture. Once one unit has them, they can travel through wall voids and outlet covers to adjacent units.
Signs You Might Have Bed Bugs
The earlier you catch a bed bug problem, the easier and less expensive bed bug treatment in Cincinnati becomes. Here’s what to look for:
Bites — Small, red, itchy welts, often in a line or cluster on exposed skin. Not everyone reacts to bites, so don’t rely on this alone.
Blood stains on bedding — Small rusty or reddish spots on sheets or pillowcases from crushed bugs or feeding.
Dark spots (fecal matter) — About the size of a period, dark brown or black, found on mattress seams, headboards, or baseboards.
Shed skins — Bed bugs molt as they grow. Finding pale, shell-like husks is a strong indicator.
Live bugs — Check the seams of your mattress, the box spring, the headboard, and any nearby furniture. Use a flashlight.
If you’re seeing two or more of these signs, it’s time to call a professional. Bed bug populations grow fast. A female can lay 200–500 eggs in her lifetime, and eggs hatch in 6–10 days.
What Doesn’t Work
A quick note on DIY treatments: over-the-counter sprays and foggers are largely ineffective against bed bugs. Bed bugs have developed resistance to many common pesticides, and foggers don’t reach the harborage sites where bugs and eggs are hiding. Washing your bedding helps but won’t eliminate an infestation.
Heat treatment is one of the most effective options — bed bugs die when exposed to temperatures above 120°F. Professional heat treatments can reach every corner of a room, including inside walls and furniture.
At Delhi Pest Control, we assess each situation and recommend the most effective, least invasive approach. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer with bed bugs.
When to Call for Bed Bug Treatment in Cincinnati
If you suspect bed bugs, don’t wait. Call sooner rather than later. The longer you wait, the larger the population gets, the more areas of your home they spread to, and the more treatments it takes to eliminate them.
We’re licensed pest control professionals serving Delhi Township, Green Township, Westwood, Cheviot, Colerain Township, and communities across Cincinnati’s west side. If you’ve got a concern, give us a call. We’ll come out, assess the situation honestly, and give you a straight answer.
There’s no shame in having bed bugs. But there’s also no reason to let them take over your home.
